Gottgetröst
Spacious suite with integrated bathroom
Eduard „Gottgetröst“ Almásy bought the castle in 1892 and being a member of the National Geographic Society he was responsible for Bernstein becoming a hotspot for scientists, explorers and adventurers.

Georg Almásy (1867 – 1933) spent his life exploring the world, even reaching China in 1906. From Kirgistan he brought back an "exchange student" who spent a year at the castle to deepen the understanding of each other´s culture.

Tantalouis

Aunt Louise gave the name to this room. She was the sister of the first Almásy at Bernstein Castle. Her portrait is displayed to the right side of the window, next to her husband´s.

Marie & Margit

The portrait of the two sisters Marie & Margit is displayed above the bed. Marie was very talented, many paintings in the castle were created by her.

Kisebb

Professor Kleiner (in Hungarian "Kisebb") not only helped to set up the family´s library - back then a big deal - but was also responsible for turning the defensive structures into a blossoming garden.

Lori

Eleonore Batthyány-Strattmann, also called "beautiful Lori", was famous in Vienna around the year 1700. After the death of her husband she took over the reins. Twice she succesfully defended the castle against hostile armies.

Mária-Róza

Princess Mária-Róza Esterházy lived in these chambers, her portrait is located in the living room slightly below the one of Empress Maria Theresia. She married János Almásy in the year 1929.

Pascha
Suite with integrated bathroom
János Almásy, the brother of the famous "English Patient", lived here. One of the many curiosities in the castle is the portrait above the sofa: A member of the Almásy family who was ambassador in Konstantinopel during the Austro-Turkish wars had this painting made, showing himself in traditional Turkish clothing.
