In the 17th century the defensive structures became obsolete due to new techniques in warfare and so the inner parts of the castle were turned into a natural garden, which is now the oldest of it´s kind in Burgenland.
Follow the trails of the "English Patient"
The most famous resident of the castle was probably László E. Almásy, whose live was the blueprint for the book and film "The English Patient", which won nine oscars in the year 1997, including the award for "best film". You can learn more about his adventurous live and the history of the castle on one of our guided tours.
